There's something about mountain bike trails that I just love - as a hiker. Pity that access is typically limited to mountain bikers only. That's the way it was yesterday afternoon at York River State Park in Virginia. It seemed that every trail was marked "NO HIKERS." Since it was a Friday afternoon with little chance of encountering bikers, I made the decision to power-hike the bike trail for 90 minutes. There's something about mountain bike trails that's irresistible to me. They twist and turn, up and down, providing an excellent fitness workout. (Because of my foot injury, I was only able to maintain a 116 bpm average heart rate, but was able to maintain a 120 step per minute pace with shortened stride.) I pressed on for about 90 minutes using my trekking poles to assist. It really was awesome. I saw several white tailed deer, one of which was very curious and didn't run away.
So I think I'm hooked on mountain bike trails on Friday afternoons. GREAT fitness workout. Narrow trails set into the forest. Twists and turns and up and downs make it interesting. Yeah. I'm hooked - and I don't even own a bike.
