What is Fitness? (Pt 2)

In a general sense, fitness could simply be defined as an overall state of health and well-being. But what does that really mean? If we get a bit more specific, we might say that fitness is a task-oriented definition based on the ability to perform specific aspects of sports or occupations. Certainly a more functional definition.

Consider the following definitions of fitness obtained from a variety of sources. When combined, I think they say quite a bit about the entire domain of fitness.
  • The cultivation of an attractive and healthy physique
  • The ability to perform physical activity without distress or injury
  • The ability to meet the demands of one's lifestyle
  • A variety of factors combined to give one an efficient body, able to cope with the demands of the environment
  • A measure related to performance or health
  • A condition where the systems supporting oxygen to the body during physical training function well
Attractiveness, minimal stress, injury-free, meeting demands, efficiency, peak performance, oxygen-support. Yeah, these words say "fitness" to me. Sounds like a much better definition than just "being in shape."

I came across Dr. John Spencer Ellis' article on the same subject just yesterday. Here's his take: What is Fitness?

Looks like being able to function well for the task at hand is the key. I for one certainly want to be hiking well into my 80's. Now THAT'S functional!
